Democratic war?

Is it true that no two democratic countries have ever gone to war?

Well, better minds than mine certainly think this is the case - especially 1998 Economics Nobel Prize winner, Prof Damartya Sen, who cites it as an example of how adopting liberal democratic principles can help solve world poverty.

One could scarcely call it a 'war' perhaps, but the USA did invade the island of Grenada - both 'combatants' being democracies - in 1983.

What about the case of the USA v Chile in 1974? The CIA certainly abetted the overthrow of the democratically elected Allende govt. Isn't that a democratic govt plotting the overthrow of another?

I wish to refute what "Allen" said. Indeed, the United States did go to war with Great Britain in the 1800's. The was was called The War of 1812 and lasted from 1812 to 1815. But at the time Great Britain was still under the rule of a monarch
