Dog Diabetes - any info please
4 Answers
My sisters has just found out that her best friend, her protector, her beloved pooch has diabetes she is absolutely devastated. He is a Rotty, 10 year old but still a very active dog - bounces round like a spring chicken! The vet says treatment will cost hundreds of pounds + monthly treatments of approx 50 for the rest of his life which she simply can not afford. Or to leave him and let the inevitable happen. Just wanted to know any info about diabetes or its treatment - the vet says he will go downhill fast. But i dont think she's ready for whats to come or ready to let him go. I feel a bit lost too as he's like a family member. Any info would be appreciated.

I would suggest putting him on the medication and seeing how he goes. If he does not respond well, then there would be no question about it, but if he does ok it is only going to be for a limited time, so I would see how he goes and give him at least a few months to see what happens.
Speak to the vet again and tell him your concerns, and ask him what the cheapest option for treatment is, as there may be different treatments available depending on the severity and stage of the condition.

If your friend is in receipt of Housing Benefit or Council Tax Benefit the PDSA will pay all medication costs if they have a branch near you.
