Do yoy have to be invited, or can you ask. How often does he give an audience, how many people get one in a typical year?

As far as I know there is a public audience every Wednesday with minimum formality. However if you want a private audience, that would be much more difficult - I suppose it would depend on who you are, why you want it, etc.
