Thank you for your help ! I used the ipod c.d. to add Itunes to my laptop .However I may not be doing the right things as this is all very new to me !
well what exactly happens when you try to put songs on your ipod?

Nothing at all registers on the ipod . When I go into my library of downloaded tracks and try to download them it says no device detected as if it is not connected. Could it be that the cable provided by Apple (even though it fits perfectly) needs an adaptor because I am not sure whether the computer has firewire?
As an alternative to "Firewire", Try USB. I only ever use the USB2 cable which came with the i-pod & find it VERY fast, A typical CD takes 3-5 Minutes to Import into the laptop then literally 10 seconds! to load up to the I-Pod. For any I-Pod problems Try Apples Forums, http://discusssearch.info.apple.com
