i expect it all depends on the time of day you travel.

The worst bit is driving through Salisbury. I've only ever driven through on a weekend so during rush hour i would've thought it'd be a lot busier. It's annoying when you get stuck behind someone going slowly on a single carriageway road but once you're on the dual carriageway / motorway it's fine. I'd give it a practice run if it's an important decision!
It sounds like you have done your research and picked the one and only route between the two destinations.
Are you finding the Salisbury/Portsmouth part a nightmare because the roads are so busy?
The Salisbury ring road is particularly hellish around the Salisbury College roundabout (where you would turn left onto the 'Southampton Road' where the superstores are).
I have an excellent route to suggest that bypasses this nasty bit of road if you are interested.
The best way to get to Portsmouth is the route you are taking. I dream of the day they build a dual carriageway between Salisbury and Southampton! Until then, I shall continue to listen to some good storybooks on my car stereo!
