i have a dat file (apparently!!) and it needs converting to AVI (also apparently...can u tell im very technical?) so i can run it in Adobe Premier Pro 1.5

However, I doubt that any of them can help you because 'dat' isn't a video format. A file with this extension just contains 'raw data' which is used by a specific program. Without having that particular program on your PC, the data is useless. See here:

If you know what program created the file, you can use that program (assuming that it's on your PC) to open the file and then re-save the information in a recognised video format.

I got it from kathmandu! A photography company filmed an event for me and I wanted to edit it to make a short little film as its over an hour long and alot of it no good for the film. I can open it in windows media player but obviously that doesnt edit as well

If the file opens in Windows Media Player, you might be able to open it (and then edit it) with this:

tried downloading that then read a review after which said that it contained a serious virus only cleanable by AVG pro..have deleted it and scanned it with my free antivirus but paranoid by laptops infested.
got more info from kathmandu. they say they made it in Premier Ulead and should be easy to edit
any thoughts?
