Is the making of Plastics from Crude Oil as detrimental to the environment as the Internal'' Combustion Engine''?
Ie if we fond an alternative fuel to Petrol or Gasoline and still made plastics ,would the environment be still affected .

No, not really. The problem with burning fossil fuels in the engine is that they produce carbon dioxide, causing the greenhouse effect. As plastics are not burnt then they do not cause this problems.

That is not to say that plastics are harmless. They take a great deal of time to decompose and there is quite a lot of energy used in their manufacture.

In addition to plastics, many of the precursors to pharmaceuticals are derived from crude oil.
