Many dead branches, pruned last year, wonder if how it was pruned damaged our tree.

Depends on when you pruned them. Autumn is a bad time as some trees suffer with 'die back' if pruned too late(japanese maples especially) and suffer frost damage. If you prune in late spring there should be no problems as any new growth will harden off before the early frosts.
