sluggish car

my 1996 escort 1.6i/16v has become very sluggish whilst going uphill or accelerating it has also developed a very load rattling noise mainly whilst going uphill but sometimes on the flat aswell. any ideas what could be causing these problems and could they be related as i noticed them both on the same journey.

get the cat check .because they brakeup inside and twist which cause the exhaust to block up which will cause the slugish
