Cat's eyes.

I like to stare into my cats eye's because I thaught they see it as a sign of affection. Now I'm told that they see it as a sign of agression. Does anyone know how cats interprit it when you look at them look that?

Apparently cats like it if you YAWN at them, if you look at your cat in the eyes and slowly close your eyes and turn away - that is also acceptable as a form of affection. If your cat lays down and invites you to stroke its tummy that is a sign of trust.

From what i hear, you should never stare in a cat or dogs eyes as they see it as a threat.
When cats fight they stare eachother out first.
If i am looking directly at one of my cats faces, i always blink lots as apparenty they see that as welcoming

I'm not making this up but sometimes I wink at my cat and she winks back.

How a cat interprets eye contact from a human probably depends on many different factors, such as how you look at them, how comfortable they are in their immediate surroundings, how they've been raised, etc. As for staring in your cat's eyes, it's your cat. You should be able to figure out whether or not he/she feels threatened.

Hi everyone. There is a book out called "How to Talk to your Cat" - has anyone read that? I keep forgetting to get a copy and it would be useful to try to understand my cat's wishes. Puss definitely tries to talk to me - when he comes in from being in the garden he meaows away looking right at me, and grumbles a lot if it is rainy or chilly out. He has a scratching post but he won't use that, he prefers to claw at the stair-carpet, which is now looking decidedly worn. He is now 14 yrs.old and has got over a major operation well, so I don't argue with him about the clawing, bless him.

I had to give up work due to ill-health. After a couple of years I started voluntary work, and was out the house for a whole half day.

The late George was sitting waiting for me and he chirped and growled and meowed for what seemed like a whole lecture on abandonment and how lonely he was. It was like living at home again.

I am not sure abou a book - most cats can make their demands known.

My cats love it when I look deep into their eyes & talk softly to them. Their iris' even expand when I do it.

My cat talks to me all the time - we have staring contests quite a lot and he mimics me - I'll close my eyes for a few seconds and then open them, then he does it. If I yawn at him, he will yawn back - its very funny. If ask him a question he always looks at me quizzically for a moment then miaows back at me.

Such funny creatures!

Hi everyone, it has been nice hearing about your cats and their different ways. A house definitely feels more of a home when there's a cat curled up by the fire - or on the best settee or chair, more than likely!

Our Puss saw the Vet today and we were told he is blind in one eye and it is possible it could be a brain tumour. He also had blood tests for various other possibilities. So we are now worriedly waiting for the test results.

Thanks, MWB, for your kindness in asking after Puss, I do appreciate it. The Vet rang me today to say Puss's kidneys are malfunctioning, (due to old age), he has high white blood cell count, and thyroid is overactive, a benign growth causing that. He hasn't had the scan for the suspected brain tumour yet.
We are sad that age is catching up with Puss, and he is so brave and patient about his disabilities. He is needing - and getting - lots of affection and petting. We are seeing the Vet again tomorrow for tablets to help Puss and investigate further treatments.
