taskbar

when I open my computer sometimes the taskbar icons are not complete ie: some missing, like the Speedtouch ASDL modem one which on my computer is a block of four squares . I then restart my computer & it often fixes it but sometimes I have to turn it off & reopen it before it loads properly. What could be causing this, any ideas?

Do you have an external modem, i.e. Speedtouch? I have, and until both lights are steady, not on and off, I do not attempt to proceed.
