is there a legal requirement regarding the size of a parking bay.

The one thing I do know is........
When you go into a car park, especially a council run one there is a charter / legal agreement on the board where the ticket machine usually is.
This states your responsibilties, ie displaying a correct ticket, not using disabled bays or motorcycle ones unless you are eligible.
Their side of the bargain states that they have to provide a suitable and secure parking area.
If you're planning on complaining about it though they would probably say your vehicle was too big or something, anything to get out of paying things like compensation.

There are requirements which set a minimum size for bay, but no maximum size.
The problem is that the bay sizes are out of date compared to modern car sizes which with every new model get longer and wider.
sorry to hear about your car merlin but if somebody hit your car then its the other drivers fault not the councils.
