I see its dated 1955- good year that!- but I noticed the reference to turning off the washer, vacuum and dryer. Were dryers around in 1955 then? ANyone know what they were like?

that is an american magazine, we didn't have automatic washers here, only twin tubs and the big washers bendix made, you had to be with the washer most of the time to use it and i had to be pulled to the sink to fill it and empty it, front loaders weren't around. no timblers either it was a mangle or possibly by about 1960 a spin dryer, most people had a carpet sweeper as there weren't fitted carpets either, and the cylynder was the first vaccuum i am sure.

Up until I was about 13, we used a Hotpoint - a huge cream square thing that you dragged to the sink and filled/emptied with a hose. You had to use wooden tongs (bleached white by the hot water/soap) and it had a mangle on the top that you could use either to drain into the washer, or swing it over the sink. You couldn't just 'pop' a few things thru a wash, to make it economical, you had to do large loads, and it practically took over the kitchen! It had a huge black 'agitator' to move the clothes in the water, and you had to be in attendance - it wasn't just a case of throwing in the clothes and soap and flick a switch. Even though I'm only 38, I still thank god for automatic washing machines!
