i need help finding a book

i read a book a while back. cant remember the title or the author. what i remember is a boy who is waiting for a letter that he has been accepted in a race. after starting the race he realizes that there can only be one winner. one person will finish the race. as they start falling behind one-by-one they are killed throughout the race until only one runner remains. any help would be gratefully appreciated. thank you.

It sounds like the Long Walk by Stephen King writing as Richard Bachman. I think the name of the book is The Bachman Books. I have also heard that this is being made into a film.

It's definately 'The Long Walk' by Stephen King (not under Bachman though!) coz we have a copy!! The organisers of the event shoot anybody who stops walking for more than so many seconds!!! Really good book-and I don't even like King books!
