kitchen extractors

hi,

i was just wondering if someone could give me some advice on getting an extractor fitted in our kitchen. We live in a terraced house, and our kitchen is at the back with the wall where we would have the extractor being an outside wall.

Is there any particular kind that would be best suited for this? and who do you get to install etc an extractor fan - is it a builder or an electrician or someone else?

any advice would be much appreciated - i cant cope with the horrible stickyness all around my kitchen much longer!

Do you mean the type that fit above your cooker?? if so then you can buy them that recirculate so no need to have it ducted to the outside.Regarding fitting them, they just screw into the wall (usually about 4 screw holes) and depending on how near the wall sockets are sick a plug on the end on the cable and its done(if you`ve a sparebox then fit the wires into that)

I installed one myself last year - was easy enough to do - had to knock a hole in the wall for the ducting from the extractor and just ran the electrics for it off a nearby socket - never found out if there was any buildings regs. I should have followed for the job I should have known about - maybe buildersmate could enlighten me ?
One thing about the type that re-circulate - they dont extract the moisture from the air - just re-circulate it.

Any extractor you buy will have the capability to re-curculate or vent out,re-curculation is fine only as last resort,that is if you cannot access an outside wall, in which case you must use the charcoal filter which is supplied with some model and only at an extra cost with other models. A re-curculated extractor only has about 70-75percent efficency compared to venting out. If you are able to vent out, make sure that if the charcoal filter is supplied, it must be removed otherwise it will lower the extraction performance. quite simple realy.

To Add - The extracter can be fitted by anyone competent in DIY, but A qualified electrician who is regd Part P must do the wiring or connection otherwise the responsibility if anything went wrong would be yours alone.
