don maclean - american pie (lenin, marx etc)
van der graaf generator - when she comes (blake)
REM - sidewinder sleeps tonight (dr. zeuss!)
Natasha Bedingfield mentions Byron Shelley and Keats in her song "These Words"
Dexy's Midnight Runners - 'Burn It Down' (Oscar Wilde, Sean O'Casey, Lawrence Stern, Eugene O'Neill, etc...)
Done Too Soon by Neil Diamond mentions a few...but alas the song is so old (like me) that I can't remember any of the names.

Hi, thanks to all. None of these were on my list and quite a few surprises. Surprised to see the roll-call of names in Neil Diamond's lyric "Done Too Soon," which I thought I knew. Overnight I added two songs of my own - "Dangling Conversations" by Simon & Garfunkel, which mentions poets Robert Frost and Emily Dickinson and the Beachs 1970s hit "Califorbnia Saga" which name-checks the 1962 Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck.
I also posted this teaser on the Arts & Literature site, from where a deluge of responses came.

Oops, the title of that band shudda read Beach Boys and their 1970s hit "California Saga" which name-checks the 1962 Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck.
I have also thought of an irish band, A House, which name-checked hundreds of poets, writers etc in "Endless Art."
I can't believe you haven't acknowledged my fantastic link to The Book Lovers by The Divine Comedy

Hi eddiebun
double apology. Had not observed your answer because I reviewed a whole lot together. Even worse I was not aware of that particular Divine Comedy track, even though I live less than fifty miles from Neil Hannon's home town.
Looking back - my comment seems a bit rude - so apologies from me too !

Allegedly Sean Hughes is on the track as well, so that's another author!

If want an mp3 of it, leave you're e-mail here, this thread is well hidden now, so you shouldn't get any spammers getting your e-mail. If not good luck anyway.
Sorry I've changed my name from eddiebun to JDOvengloves - A Half Man Half Biscuit reference.

No I didnt think your ansser was rude. I am amazed "gaps" my own question has exposed in my knowledge of contemporary music. The Divine Comedy is one example.
I understand what it feels like to post an answer and not have it acknowledged. About a month back I did a research with which I was pleased for an answer in the art and literature section.
