is it illegal to put a young healthy dog to sleep if he has never bit anyone. the reason i am asking is because i rehomed my lovely affectionate german shepherd lucas, vetted by alison at the rehoming animals in need centre, and the new owners put him to sleep within 10 hours of having him. i had not signed the paperwork and they did not ask me if i wanted lucas back after promising they would if he did not settle.

If they were the new LEGAL owners of the dog then no it is not illegal to put a young, healthy dog to sleep. Have they told you any reason for putting the dog to sleep?

I find it hard to believe that anyone would take a young, totally healthy dog from a rescue centre and have it put to sleep for no reason within such a short space of time.

Most vets would want a reason for euthanasia, usually health reasons (eg epilepsy, HD etc.).

Once you have relinquished legal ownership of a dog to a rescue centre they are not obliged to tell you what has happened to that dog.

I suspect they must have had a reason for having the dog put to sleep.

i rehomed him to the countryside because he needed alot of exercise and i couldnt manage him on a lead. i saw many dog trainers but still he pulled me over. i wanted him to have fields and runs and a better quality of life. i vetted many people but i wasnt happy to give lucas to them,this couple lived in stonesfield oxfordshire, surrounded by fields,woods and rivers and came highly recommonded by alison at rain rehoming animals in need.they had lost their german shepherd of 14 years last summer and fell in love with lucas when they saw him. i had not signed the papers handing him over . they promised to call me if there was any problems due to him being very attached to me.im absolutely distraught,as i trusted these people.

Just a thought - is it possible that he was seen 'worrying' sheep or other livestock?

If he got into a field of sheep and was seen running in amongst them then maybe the farmer insisted he was put to sleep.

I think there must have been more to it that you have not been told about. What does Alison say about it? Have you talked to her?

This is just awful!!!

Have you spoken with the new owners about this, yet?
I don't see that within 10 hours anything could have happened to justify this!
