In Einaudi piano scores, there's often a C1, or C3. What does this mean?

Hi,
the lowest C on a grand piano is known as C1 the next octave up will be C2 and so on.
It is easier to print the score like this rather than having loads of leger lines.
Hope this helps.
Daffy.
