I was too shocked to scream, but nearly fainted. When he realised what had happened, he rushed me to A&E. It wasn't broken, but even now it really gives me gip, especially in the winter months.
Again, a few years back I badly stubbed my little toe on the side of the vacuum cleaner, it wasn't broken, but ditto with the little finger. I think it's the sensitive nerves that give you all the pain.
It's possible that you have damaged ligaments in your ankle. I have damaged the ligaments in both feet (football injuries) and it took about 6-8 months before I could play again. Nothing will show up in the x-ray (as far as I know). Go to see a physiotheraperist and they might be able to diagnose what type of injury it is. Otherwise you just need lots of rest and put your feet up.
I twisted my ankle too around the same time and have been off most sports since. You should tell your doc to arrange an appointment with an Orthapaedic Doctor who is the specialist in these matters. On my visit a specific problem was diagnosed and Steroid injections into the problem area were reccomended. He also suggested that my arch was too high and arranged for an tailored instep to be made
