Painting a garage floor

I am planning on painting my garage floor this week. The concrete base of the garage was laid around 5 months ago so it is fairly new and as you can imagine still very dusty. I have bought some garage floor paint from B&Q. Can anyone offer any advice on what preperation i need to do or can i just give it a couple of coats?

Unless you go to the trouble of using an epoxy based product, you will be quite dissapointed. The problem is known, at least here in the U.S. as the hot tire syndrome. After painting the floor and subsequently parking your car on the floor, the heat from the tires will actually pull the paint in large patches off the floor. The floor needs to be thorougly cleaned, etched with acid and the epoxy based paint applied as directed. Even then, there may be problems but if done according to instructions it should last quite a while.

Cheers for the info. My garage won't be having a car in it. Its going to have my vespa in it and also be used as a workshop. I doubt i would have any hot tyres. Will i still be able to just give it a couple of coats without treating it first?

As clanad says, give the floor a good hoovering, then de-grease it with some white spirit. It should be ok to give it a couple of coats.

Did mine 3 Years ago with B&Q floor paint hoovered all over did 2 coats with a cheap roller left it to harden for a week car been over it nearly everyday since no problems at all just have to sweep floor now and again.

Why would anyone bother painting a garage floor?

A garage floor, if not painted, should at least be sealed to prevent dust. I painted my floor years ago and it still looks good. I brushed it with diluted pva and after it dried, I paited it with grey floor paint using a roller.
