I am useless at choosing wines and tend to go for pretty pictures and price rather than anything else...

Would you plan a menu without some thought as to flavours? A bit of research online will give you the perfect wine accompaniment, or as BBW says, ask the shop owner (unless you are at a supermarket, then go for what you like)

if you like red, can't go wrong with a cotes due rhone, soft and really fruity. for a white, i like a muscadet, but that might be a bit sharp for some tastes.
and nothing wrong with lower price wines, we rarely pay more than 4 - 5 for a bottle. i think unless you're quite a wine buff, you really can't tell the difference. it's more to do with the type of wine you like personally, than the price.

first of all avoid supermarket buying for a while and start at your local Bottoms up, Threshers etc, not only do they do a 3 for 2 on wines i find the staff are superb with their recomendations. My local Bottoms up is great, the lady now knows what i like and will tempt me to try differnt wines and 9/10 times she's spot on. This method has worked for me as i've tried all sorts now and i have worked out what i like. I very rarely buy supermarket wine, not unless they stock one of my fabourites, i prefer the personal service of Bottoms up everytime.
