hair loss following thwack on head

My hairdresser found a line approx 4cm long by 1/2cm wide on the back of my head where there is no hair. This only appeared recently and she thinks it may be caused by a thwack on the back of the head by a beach umbrella when I was on holiday a couple of weeks ago

Is this likely? and will it grow back? Has this happened to anyone (the hairloss, not being hit by an umbrella)?

Mistake - it should read 1/2 cm not 12cm .....

Depends whether you actually cut your head at the time. If you did, you'll end up with scar tissue and you won't get hair growing on it.

If you weren't actually cut, I suppose there may be a chance of some nerve damage that would prevent hair growing there, but you'd need to see a doctor to check that out.

Thanks for the answer - no I didn't cut my head. It hit with quite a bit of force but some of the impact was taken by a 'crocodile clip' type thing that I was wearing - I wondered if this ripped out the hair, but cannot remember any loose hair coming out

was she using clippers at the time by any chance???

:) - no she wasn't .........

Actually would prefer it if she had as at least I would know it would grow back again

Bit strange that I didn't notice any hair coming out when I brushed it
