Grass seeds

Whens the best time to put some seeds down? Not for a whole lawn, just a patch a couple of metres square. And, do I have to dig up the area first or just scatter them around?

It really depends on how bare the patches are, if completely bare if may be worth digging it over and crumblig it finely or if it's just a bit sparse you could lightly fork it over.
Choose seed to suit your purpose ie shade, hard-wearing etc. sow thinly cover with some good top soil or compost and firm it down well then keep it watered in dry weather.
Some wire mesh wirt the edges turned down placed over the top should keep it from being disturbed. Good Luck Tbird+

No it's perfectly hardy, it will just stay dormant til the conditions are favourable. I've sown it in the autumn before now and it did'nt germinate to the following spring.
I seeded a bare patch where my dog churned it up, about 4 weeks ago and I noticed it's just starting to poke through now ( very fine hair-like blades of grass)
Back on with the winter woolies by the sounds of it !
