I need to know for the story I'm writing now - how long would it take to recover from a gunshot wound to the chest (possibly one that was fairly close to the heart). Not something I know much about, and googling it hasn't help - anyone know the answer?

Not easy, but one must assume that it is a no -fatal shooting. Chest injuries by bullets from minor to severe depending on structures involved. The very lucky candidate may get away with no chest organs involved and his recovery would be days rather than weeks. major blood vessel involvement if treated quickly by surgery may involve recovery times of weeks. Big problem would be if lung was punctured and air escaping into the thoracic cavity, and this may involve months especially if major blood vesels were also involved. Hope this is helpful albeit incmplete.
