Sickness during anesthetic
7 Answers
I am so sick with anesthetic and am due to have a hysterectomy soon. After my last op I told the anesthetist and he was to give me something to counteract this but I was still bad afterwards. A friend said that there is a drug they can give for this beginning with the letter "Z" but they dont like to give this as it is very expensive. Does anyone know which drug this might be.

It is much more expensive at 5.99 a shot as opposed to 54p for a shot of Prochlorperazine. Just ask the anaesthetist to have it written up pre-op and Im sure they will do it for you. The junior docs on the ward are the ones who will be reluctant to prescribe it for fear of getting into trouble for being wasteful, they would be expected to try a less expensive drug first.
I really feel for you, most people get some mild nausea and vomiting but I have nursed patients with severe post op effects. Just make sure your anaesthetist is fully informed of your problem and there are definite steps they can take to help. Hopefully because it is keyhole surgery you will not need to be put so deep under and this will help. Campbellking is right about spinal anaesthetic you should give it some serious thought if it is offered to you and you can get some mild sedation so you wont really care what is going on :) Good luck with whatever you decide X Alison
