i'm sure it's a latin word for mortar . mortar being a sand/lime cement mix . ps learnt that when apprentice brickie.

It is simply a short form of 'composition' - meaning made up of different parts.

Incidentally, the latin for 'mortar' is mortarium

Cheers for both of your replies, I was swayed towards the latin answer John but then Ethel came in with the correct latin name for mortar so sorry bud i`m gonna have to award her the stars.
