Travel from London to Whitehaven

My Dad is going to be in the UK in May/June and needs to get from London to Whitehaven preferably without hiring a car. He is English but we have lived in New Zealand for 30 odd years now and so not so familiar with all the options. What do people recommend?

Quickest way is probably Euston to Carlisle and then catch the Whitehaven train. You could get off the train at Lancaster and then go north from there. About as broad as it's long. Or, you could get off at Penrith and catch a bus. Nice journey by bus.

Although it is the GNER website it will offer all tickets available. You can currently book tickets for up to 8th June. The earlier you book the cheaper they are.

You can collect the tickets at your departure station but you will need the credit/debit card on which they were booked.

Thanks for your answers and interest. We eventually booked him a bus ticket through the internet. He decided the train was too expensive. Cheers!
