Now when you open iTunes it won't be able to find your database or any of your files - don't let it search for anything. If you sync your ipod now, it will remove everything.
Close iTunes and rename the file back as it was (you might have to delete a duplicate that itunes created first) and all your music will re-appear next time you open itunes.

You can do it also by managing your ipod manually. You then click the boxes of the playlists you want on your ipod and leave the others unchecked. Then sync (syncronise) the i-pod (just means transfer/delete as you tell it to) this then gets rid of everything you dont want and leaves everything you do.
In the left hand pane where your playlists are listed - With your ipod plugged in it will say DEVICES and underneath the neame of your ipod.
Click on the little arrow to the left of the device name. Then click on manage music manually in the main window (which should show your ipods details) Click on the music tab at the top of the page and check/uncheck the boxes.
