Covered by insurance?

The oil light came on in my car - so I put some oil in.

The oil light remained on for the next journey so I put some more in.

The problem is, the garage says that I have put too much in and it has now damaged the catalytic converter and the whole works will cost around �750.

I don't have �750 - does this seem a reasonable cost (car is a Seat Ibiza) and will I be able to claim on my insurance?

why did you not check on the dipstick how much oil was in the car,and put in just what you needed to top it up,checking the dipstick as you did it,as for �750 for a new catalytic convertor,it seems a little high,what car is it,did you take it to a exhaust garage,like kwik fit, or a general garage.

Has no one told you about the dipstick?

I am not a mechanic, so hopefully someone more qualified can help, but I am surprised too much oil would damage a catalytic converter.

I very much doubt any insurance company would entertain a claim as it was not an accident.

It will have damaged more than just the cat.

It could have ruined the whole engine,

To get away with paying only �750 you are quite lucky.

I know it was a stupid error.

Just in case anybody else does this - I was covered by the insurance under accidental damage.

Even if a foolish mistake, it's still worth investigating with the insurance company.
