Internet Explorer foible

Hi,
Out of the blue lately when I click on my IE icon on the desktop, instead of starting the program it creates another icon, clicking on that new icon does nothing at all. However many times I click on the original icon creates more and more new ones, each with a number ("Internet Explorer 2,3,4" etc). The program will launch as normal from the start menu. Any ideas why this has happened?! I have tried deleting and replacing the original icon without effect. I am using XP home by the way.
Many thanks.

Do you run any from of anti-virus software? If so, is it up to date? Which version of internet explorer do you use?
