I know Shaw is a common name , but I am trying to find the background of George Shaw who was born in 1822 in Swinton, York. The only mention I can find is in the 1881 census, nothing before or since. His wife's name was Jane, and they had 4 children, one of whom, Walter, was my grandfather, and in 1881 was 13.
I would be very grateful if someone can put an end to my frustration, please.

A George Shaw was baptised at Swinton by Sheffield 31 march 1820 son of Thomas and sarah Shaw, if that is the one you want
or there was another one baptised at Swinton by Sheffield 6 may 1821 son of william and helen shaw.
if you have calculated the date of birth from the age in 1881, the census in 1881 was done in April (as i recall) and so that seconms one could be right, but so could the other i guess, does George have a son or daughter named for any of those parents?

he 1871 was done in the spring too, early april, and so the second one in may looks more likely

George is a shopkeeper

the son-in-law category was mistakenly used to describe step-son in the early census returns

Dear CheekyChops...how clever of you.very many thanks! Can you please tell me where you found this, as I have tried previous and later census returns. In 1881 there was a "nephew" of George living at 65, Station Street with the family. His name was William Orkoey, and he was born in Besford, as was Jane. He would have been 11 in1871. I wonder if Jane's maiden name might hae been Orkoey, a name which I believe might have been derived from a Turkish name. Any ideas?

yes cheekychops is correct with the census but i have looked at the Parish registers for Swinton and found George's baptism in 1822. : )

cheekychops i am not sure which jane is 33 in 1871 and 32 in 1851, are these two wives with the same first name or is the one in 1871 a daughter?

Dot Hawkes and CheekyChops.......The Jane who is 33 in 1871 was George's wife, but I must admit, Agnes Gill, 23, is a puzzle, especially as there is an Agnes(s) Shaw age 15,whom I imagine is George's 3rd daughter in 1881

I have to say I never noticed the difference in Jane's age, it was the only George Shaw that came up that was anywhere near matching the other. It may not be the right one after all.
