focus dodgy speedo

y reg ford focus zetec,running like an old fiesta, speedo suddenly drops to zero then going straight back up now its progressed into droppin staying at zero,slight loss of power and then all ignition lights come on,i depress clutch to give it a bit of a jolt,seems to sort it ,no warning or pattern to this becoming dangerous due to power steering cuttin off,almost ended up in a field, any suggestions

Same thing happened to my focus it was a 98 zetec, just change the speedo sensor located on top of the gearbox, how to change the part is in the Haynes manual, it is only held in with a metal pin, the book said that it should just pull out, but it took ages, and even longer to remove the sensor its self.

oh it cost about �25 to by the part.
