The Victorians used to be paranoid about being buried alive which is one of the reasons the bodies were laid out in the parlour (and literally rotted in front of the family.) The richer Victorians had elaborate coffins with bells attached to the lid so any movement from the 'deceased' would cause the bell to ring. In the western world I doubt anyone could be buried alive by accident. Death has to be certified by a doctor and the undertakers are supposed to perform certain tests for death before embalming. Decomposition sets in pretty quickly in a corpse ( in the abdomen near the appendix) and rigor mortice also sets in soon after death.

The insurance company were unhappy for some reason and insisted on his exhumation several days later. He was found to be alive, but deeply unconscious. He made a full recovery.
A German woman woke up in a coffin after a traffic accident, having been pronounced dead.
There have been many such incidents so it is highly likely that people have been buried or cremated whilst in a deep coma.
Embalming is not routine, and is not necessary these days, unless the funeral is delayed for any reason.
The Irish newspapers reported the arrest of a naked man, Peter Archer running down the street in 1996. He was let off when he explained he had been fleeing from a morturary, having officially been pronounced dead.

Ethel...I have to contradict you on your comment that embalming is not routine and is not necessary.
Many of my relatives work in our family funeral business., started by my great grandad.More and more people now want to view their loved ones and believe me, if the deceased are not embalmed the family are in for a shock. Decomposition starts immediately after death and being blunt, a corpse can be pretty whiffy within 24 hours. I don't know what you mean by a 'delay' with a funeral. Where our business is based the time lapse between a straightforward death and the funeral is usually 6-8 days. Trust me, you wouldn't want to loiter around an unembalmed corpse after that length of time.

Did anyone see a documentary about a lady living in Australia suffering from narcolepsy, who has woken in the mortuary 3 times? Her son, when younger had tried to tell the paramedics his mother wasn't dead, but was ignored. Her vital signs were so faint, her heart beat and pulse were indistinguishable, that doctors pronounced her dead. She lives in fear of actually being buried alive. She wears a bracelet which requests hospital emergency departments attach a heart and pulse monitor on any of her admissions.
in the days when people weren't able to tell other than by looking it happened a lot - comas, paralysis etc, were misunderstood and the person was considered dead.
it is also something that contributes to the myth of vampires and zombies - people finding the scratches and believing they are the living dead.
many people used to request they be beheaded before burial - just to be sure.
i wonder if the wake is socalled because its the time to wait for them to wake if they are going to...?

My Great Grandmother woke up in her coffin. It was open in the parlour for people to pay their respect's. She'd been pronounced dead but had been in a coma of sorts. After that shock she demanded her wrist's be cut right after her death just in case! My Gran and all her daughter's developed a morbid fear of death and coffin's after that.
