Yes, it most certainly does! Cats are the only animal type to reproduce in this way, and when the male withdraws, his penis is barbed, thus causing the female to scream, and unsurprisingly lash out at the male, who, if he is experienced knows to get out of the way pretty quickly. This process actually stimulates the release of the egg, which may, or may not then get fertilized. That is what explains so many 'multi-coloured' litters as a result of different fathers of the kittens. What then leads to the kittens being born, quite simply is overcrowding in the uterus, which stimulates the queen to go into labour. Kittens produced at the end of a mating spell - which can last for up to a week can be anything from conceived on the first to the last mating, thus creating what we would call 'runts', as they could be up to a week younger, and less likely to survive.
