can someone tape my phone calls without telling they are going to do so

Yes, but they can't be used in evidence.
Yes Ethel you are right but they can help e.g my daughter was involved in an accident through the person in front not signalling.At the time he admitted to my daughter he was in the wrong but when he got in touch with his insurance company they told him not to admit he was in the wrong.So I got my daughter to ring him and my phone tapes a 2 way conversation, then we took it off on tape, as he admitted to my daughter that the insurance company told him not to admit he was in the wrong.So we sent copy of tape to my daughters insurance company and it was dealt with through them.It wasn't taken to court but he admitted he was in the wrong.If we hadn't done this it would have looked as if my daughter was in the wrong.It wasn't a serious accident but that is not the point as it wasn't her fault.
The answer to the question really depends upon who the 'someone' is and the purpose for which they are making the recording.
