The existence of ley lines was suggested by an amateur archaeologist in the 1920s. A whole new area of study in geodesy commenced and many believe that there is something meaningful about geographical positioning and the gravity field and geometrical aspects of temporal variations, studies of the Earth's magnetic field are also carried out under geodesy.
Whilst many would argue that the theory of ley lines and geographic positioning is purely coincidental since even now most people prefer to walk in straight lines or even a fanciful supposition, research in Egypt has shown that natural geographic and indeed astrological patterns have been imitated by man on earth in ancient times vis the pyramids, the Nile and the Milky Way. So it is not an impossibility.
The original suggestion was that ancient monuments and monoliths may have followed some linear pattern, and it is possible of course that during some reformation of banishing paganism that churches and cathedrals would have replaced some of these monuments and hence fallen along the path of the alleged ley lines.
