Noisy Neighbours
6 Answers
Does anyone know how I can stop noise coming from our neighbours garden. Their children shout and scream constantly when the weather in nice, and I can hear the adults conversations, which means I am limited to using my own garden. It is really getting me upset.
The houses are 2 years old, both 'L' shaped and situated quite close to each other which gives a courtyard effect. There is a small fence for a boundry, about 4' with open slats this is covered by a thin layer of bamboo for decoration.
I would go around and ask them to be quieter but the house is rented and various people come and go, I dont want the constent confrontation, I need something permanent.
Would a higher fence with no slats or a 6' high brick wall work. Or can anyone suggest anything else.
I would be grateful for your comments.

Running around and making noise is what children do best, and it would be unfair to try and stop them.If kids cant have a runaround and play in the safety of their own backyard then where can they play?
My neighbours on the left have kids, and I have 2 kids myself, and I love to hear all of them laughing and screaming on a summers day.My neighbours on the right a 2 pensioners, but they love the kids and often invite them into their own garden to play.
Although I am ok with kids noise, I do understand that not everyone feels as I do. Putting up a 6ft fence may help a little, but not that much. I dont think there is much you can do apart rom putting on some headphones and listening to some music.

I know it sounds like I am being unreasonable, dont get me wrong I love children, I was a nursery nurse, so I know children need to play and express themselves. They also need guide lines to show respect and consideration for other people living in the same space, after all it's not a school playground they are in. Play is one thing but constant screaming and screaching is awful and I would denign anyone to say anything else. People might say they love that sort of thing but I bet they are glad when it stops, or go back to their quiet home.
You and your neighbours wont notice the noise as it's coming from your own children, what about other neighbours they could be thinking the same as me.

Hi Rosie,
I understand completely how you feel, I had this not so long ago - rented tennants with screaming, unruly, noisey kids. It was hell to live next door to - the parents were just as bad, swearing at their kids and shouting, for a year i could not sit in my own back garden due to the noise, but they have since been evicted now and my life is peaceful once more, I was lucky, but i did in the beginning try and have a work with them about the noise in a pleasant manner and all i received was abuse in return. I wish you all the luck, indeed put up a high fence, make sure you get permission though and I hope it all sorts itself out, my thoughts are with you no this one.

Thanks for reply Roughquest, thank goodness someone out there understands I thought I was going mad. You confirmed what I thought about abuse, which is what I would probably get from this latest family. As for the children going to bed late. I'm lucky in that respect they go to bed at a reasonable time.
Thanks for your kind words and thoughts. xxxx
Kwicky. At the moment my health is on the line and it's just the start of spring. Dont want to encourage children to make even more noise.
Thanks anyway.
