we have a strip of garden to side of our home which has marestail, if we were to dig out up to three feet down would that do any good, we are for tarmacing round the house and do not want it to come up through it, thanks .

Marestail, might as well call it nightmare cos we had it in one of our previous gardens and no amount of digging, weeding, crushing the leafs then applying weedkiller and flame would kill it off.
My reckoning is this stuff will survive a nuclear winter.

Use Round-Up against it - have not had it come back since.
