My fencing contractor has just erected a new fence and the posts and arris rails are facing my neighbour, and I have the boards. It is my boundary and I have paid for the fence but is there a legal aspect to who has the posts?

No - it is usual custom for the person whose fence it is to have the posts facing them but there is no law. As long as everything is completely on your property, you can have it any way you like.
As long as its on your property the posts go where you want them to!!
From a security point of view, the posts are normally on your side, to make it harder for people to climb over and into your property. Your contractor should have been aware of this.
It's also more practical to have the posts and arris rails on your side to keep a check possible repairs later on.
On council properties for example where the fences are provided, it's generally assumed that the person with the posts on their side has the responsibility of the fence.
