winamp vs headphones

I have a couple of mp3 files saved on my computer (at work), however I can't listen to them through my headphones. Even though most people in the office would probably appreciate a bit of music I don't think my boss would be impressed. I can listen to CDs with the headphones, but not to music/sounds from winamp, realplayer, etc. Can it be done?

I'm guessing that your headphones plug directly into your CD-ROM drive, however, to listen to MP3s you would need a sound card would need to plug your headphones into the speaker out socket to be able to hear anything. To check this, right mouse click on My Computer icon and select properties, then select device manager, look for an entry under sound, video and game controllers. A lot of companies disable on-board sound devices in such a way that the average user is not able to re-enable them.

if speakers are already set up to the computer go to Maplin electronics (to search for your nearest store and go to http:\\www.maplin.co.uk) and buy item RK58 which will split your computers line out and allow you to plug head phones into the PC while keeping the speaker attached so you could turn off the speakers and listen to the MP3s through head phones with out n e one else hearing it. but as the last person said.. u will need a sound card in your PC before you can hear any sounds from the PC... but chances are that the company you work for is cheep and will have bought cheep motherboards with onboard soundchip (AC97)

I had the same problem. What I did was find out where speakers would be plugged in into the back of the computer box. I plugged in my headphones there, and it worked.

There are two places to look. Plugging into your CD-ROM will only work when playing a cd. You need to plug them into either the sound-card, or the speakers themselves.
