caterpillar or not caterpillar

after recently cleaning out the shed we have discovered a mass of some kind of chrysalis which is in channels but covers about the bottom half of the shed. it is like a blanket which is embedded into the wood. does anyone have any idea what it could be? if you touch it you can feel something moving inside. i thought caterpillars and moths usually cocooned individually. can anyone help please?

bee or wasps? my father had something which sounds the same in his shed last year, he reckoned it was bees or wasps, but not sure.

Could it be slugs? I've seen similar things which were orangey in colour and were disgusting to clean out.

have you tried phoning scully and mulder from the x files? sounds like an alien species to me! really, I am dying to know what they are, please let us know when you find out.
