A friends daughter has it and lots of her family members in the older generation have similar communication problems (although never diagnosed, as from a different era), they are all married with their own children and hold down good jobs, in fact they are quite intelligent. Aparently there is a book called "a curious incident about a man and a dog" which helps you understand it immensley.
I think the book is called 'The curious incident of the dog in the night-time'
Definately the ability to cope depends on the degree of autism.
Autistic people have to learn what the rest of humanity seems to know instictively.
Behaviour can be inappropriate simply because they do not know that it is inappropriate.
Picking up on other peoples body language and facial expressions can be a nightmare and contrary to many peoples beliefs some high functioning autistis can be acutely embarrased by the realisation that they have committed a real social no no.
As a result they find it easier just to avoid any social interaction at all.
If you have a young autistic person in your family the greatest service you can give them is to explain what is acceptable behaviour and how to understand that other people have feelings that they can learn about. So that eventualy no-one, other than themselves, will know that they are different.
There are many mildly autistic people who function perfectly well in the big wide world.
But it is very hard work learning to be a human being when nature forgot to give you an instruction manual when you born.
