hot water scalding hot and coming out of cold tap

how do you adjust hot water temp as ours is scalding hot and coming out of cold tap now. we dont have gas heating, so hot wtaer coming off electric immersion heater, cant find a thermostat anywherer in this old house

The thermostat in the immersion sounds like its given up the ghost. Quite simple to change though, isolate the electrics to the heater then remove the heater cap, underneath you will see the themostat attached to 2 wires, undo these 2 wires then pull the thermostat out of its housing. Buy a themostat the same length, doesn't have to be the same make and then replace the opposite way round to the above. Set it to 60 degrees C.
