A back boiler is basically a metal tank behind the fire, in the chimney breast. It has a pipe for cold water in and a pipe for hot out.
This is an old system and the water could only be heated when there was a fire in the grate.
Mostly nowadays the pipes are run to a conventional gas boiler and the back boiler is left open (to save it exploding).
