I have a new job working an eleven hour day. They have said that I am not covered by the Working Time Regulations 1998. However, they could not give me an exact lunch break length. I know it will be at least 1 hour but how much more can it be without it looking like I'm taking the mickey? They wouldn't give me an exact time. Maybe I should just ask other colleagues what they do but other people sometimes take cigarette breaks & I don't smoke.

the working time regulations cover all people and you have the right to opt out,the employer has not got the right to assume on your behalf.

There are derogations attached to the regulation that cover working time and eleven hour days, you are entitled to 20mins rest after six hours at work, although there will be stated times at your place of employment, just ask.

The working time regulatios are there for health and safety, and can be found on the DTI web site.

Sounds like your employers don't really have a clue what they're doing. Lets hope they have mastered payroll!
i am a chef and we work from 9 am til 1 am straight thru, the only breaks we get are toilet ones and cigarette breaks...a bit of a bummer when like me you dont smoke!!! but unfortunately its what u expect cheffing. it depends what job u are doing too
You are legally entitled to a break after 6 hours of work.
20 minutes is the regulation.

Most firms allow 1 hr break for lunch, you are entitled to be given a specific time length for your lunch break.

In our office most people have a 8-10 coffee or walk around break in the morning and afternoon.

i am with the chef here, we are fed listening and reading about 1 hour breaks, it doesnt happen in our chosen vocation,i work for a charity and we have to eat within 20 minutes, sick fed up office workers and there 1 hour, what abouit factory workers, you are damn lucky to have a hour dont rock the boat
sorry fed up with listening to office workers you are lucky, anyone else doesnt get a hour
