Urgh! Midwives is a fairly feeble indicator for v, and for the wordplay to work it would need to be has, not have. C minus clue.

Thanks DrJohn for I was following what Town Crier said however wasn't comfortable with the clue but didn't see why. You have crystalised my wrestling. Grammarians to the fore?

Midwives = middle of wives. What is wrong with that? Sorry dr john but that is a more than acceptable Telegraph clue.
