Could anyone tell me when America gained it's 51st state !!!!! Have I missed something xx

In the 1980s a band called The The (yea) had asong which suggested England was the 51st State for obvious reasons which are even truer today.

Hehehe! Have you taken someone's gag literally Eartha? Many Americans refer to Canada as the 51st but as Star suggests, there have been many alternative interpretations depending on current affairs.

And here was I quaking in my boots thinking we might become the 51st State. It usually depends on what political party is in power at any given time as to whether we are called the 51st state or not.

Sorry for the delay ... poorly pussycat ...
As far as I was aware it was a straight question on a recent quiz I did, World Scout Jamboree. The answer of 50 was incorrect !!! I was just wondering whether you all knew something I didn't. Another one down to experience then.
