i read this book as a child whats it called please

i read a book while i was in junior school about a little boy who was a bit of an outsider from the other boys but he raced them on his home made go cart with the numberplate EGDAM which turned out to be madge his girlfriend spelt backwards i think the boy died in the book any ideas anyone please.

That was from a book of short stories as I remember; and I can't be any more help than that.

Well the boy was called Ernie Haddock.

i just done a search of ernie haddock and found the book was called the goalkeepers revenge and other short stories and the one i want was called spit nolan and in the final race it is egdam v the british queen the book waswritten by bill naughton.
