Everything I download goes into a folder called "Downloads" everything is then divided up into sub folders, Updates, tools and accessories, attachment, etc

I am frequently being told "i downloaded a file from the Internet, etc and I don't know where it is"

Decide where it is going to go before downloading it, create a folder for it specifically if necessary and remember the name of the file you are downloading.
Ether started this thread off well with 'Read the manual'. May I extend that by adding 'Remember that most software has a 'help' menu'?

Lots of questions occur here such as "How do I . . . .in Word/Outlook/Photoshop?" etc. My initial thought is usually "I haven't got a clue" but a couple of minutes later I can post a correct solution. All I do is open the program and type a relevant keyword into the 'Search' feature. I don't mind helping out, but people would get their answers far quicker if they learnt to do it for themselves ;-)

Oops!

Please accept my apologies, Ethel. I seem to have changed you into a 'volatile liquid' through my mis-spelling of your name ;-)

One further tip:

"Before paying out money to upgrade something, whether it's your PC, it's operating system or specific software, ask yourself if you really need to do so".

I.e. The guy in PC World will always tell you that you must have Windows Vista with the fastest processor, the greatest ram, the most expensive graphics card etc. If you only use your PC for word-processing and e-mail, then (even though it's running on Windows 98 on a 300MHz processor) you probably don't need to spend any money upgrading.

Always remember 'Google is your friend!' ......Try posting your problem there, you'd be suprised how many errant persons have gone before you!

.....There's always here of course.
Did you know that.......

It is not recommended that you turn off your hard drive immediately after using your PC. Windows does an awful lot of 'stuff' in the background that you aren't aware of. By turning off your system immediately you are not giving it a chance to do it's internal housekeeping. Do turn off your monitor though. It doesn't need to be on if it's not in use and it is the part of your PC that uses up the most electricity.

To add to the other tips already mentioned...

* Run disk cleanup regularly.

* Defragment your hard drive regularly.

* Make sure you regularly check for and download Windows Updates.

* You WILL get spyware/adware/tracking cookies downloaded onto your computer without you knowing about it. Learn about Anti-spyware progs and install one (or more) on your system. Check for updates weekly and run a scan at least once a week. Note that no single anti-spyware prog will ever remove everything on your system.

* Understand that freeware Firewalls, Anti-virus and Anti-spyware programs generally have only basic functionality and protection.

* Realise that all the progs mentioned above are not worth a carrot if you don't check for updates on a regular basis and actually run the necessary scans!!!.
If the computer is really mucking about system restore can fix a multitude of problems. one of the best ideas windows had with XP.
Hi Just a little confused dr spock suggested if in doubt x it out then in other post ref error safe no 397007 rojash advised using spybot if you have accidentally installed it
my question is if you are having any conflict at all and before you aim for the red x is it right to press and hold down the PC start button or are there other means to terminate frozen unwanted programs without downloading them ??? Thanks for any info

tezestwing, you can close an unwanted application or even those pesky pages Internet pages that pop up by doing ctrls+alt+del then click on application tab highlight the offending article and click end task.

Some times you will notice that the red X on these pages is hyperlinked, in that case use the above method to close it.

Don't forget you can also close most applications by right clicking on it in the bottom toolbar and select exit or close.
