I have just checked my free local newspaper and wish to tell you that I am concerned we are wasting trees for the production of unnecessary leaflets.

Here's what I found:

1) A wicks catelogue (which is in itself a paperbook book)

2) A leaflet for a Chinese takeaway

3) A leaflet for a Blinds company

4) A leaflet for Sussex Beds

5) A leaflet for adult education at Worthing college

6) A card for private rubbish collection

7) A leaflet for a loacl car showroom

8) A leaflet for Tescos express

9) A leaflet of taxi prices to local airports

What was in your free paper?

(Is this the most boring thread ever on AB?)

I'd keep the Chinese take-away one (assuming it's a menu) - never know when you might fancy one.

The rest of them I agree do seem a tad pointless, but to be completely honest I dislike them primarily on the grounds of being an irritant.

(though I guess I should find some small consolation in the fact that the someone is sitting somewhere happily chuckling away at the thought of me opening my newspaper and having to pick up all the useless pap off the floor)
Wardy, I believe these people paid to have their businesses advertised. All the above examples are means of advertisement to help promote their businesses.
We do NOT waste trees by using them to produce paper.
If we did just chop down trees ad infinitum then eventually paper manufacturers (and furniture manufacturers) will go out of business, something they do not want to happen.

So for every tree that is chopped down even more are planted in its place, in order to ensure an ever increasing supply for the future. Which is why huge tracts of Scotland, Canada and Scandinavia are covered with forests of cultivated trees. Trees are being farmed just like any other crop that we need for the future.

By the way, many people believe that the rain forests are being chopped down to make paper. Not so, paper is made from soft wood, eg pine, and the rain forests are, I believe, hardwood.
not so willowman, in canada at least the large companies, macmillan bloedel, crown zellerback, canfor to name a few are supposed to practice this policy (silverculture) but it is cheaper to pay the fine than to re-forest. even though trees are being replanted it is the minimum they can get away with.
oh and incidently pine trees are used for telephone and hydro poles, also log cabins. paper is made from primarily poplar and cottonwood and other soft or pulp wood.
I don't often agree with wardy but in this case I totally agree!!!

we are depleting century old rain forests and woodland all over the world for this so called advertising etc!! and replacing some of the trees with saplings, many of which will die!! the wildlife evicted from this woodland cant survive living in a forest of saplings!!!

Just look every week at all the paper and cardboard that is placed in your bin, there must be other ways!!!

I think it is a total disgrace!!!!!

Thanks for the pedantic corrections maxximus. I feel suitably chastised. Very shortsighted policy of canadian companies not replanting extra trees, where is their future supply coming from?
oh, and incidentally, maxximus, it looks as if Ratter15 did not bother to read either of our posts, as he still repeats the myth that centuries old rain forests are being felled to make paper!
Sometimes people get an idea in their heads and no amount of information can alter it.
Unless of course he knows something we don't?
Can I have your Wicks catalogue please Wardy?

Ta very muchly!
willowman, you smarta$$, you obviously didn't read mine either, where does it say in my answer that the rain forests are felled for paper!!! Oh I see, just because I mentioned paper and cardboard in the same answer!! and did you not see the "etc"!!! I will write 100 hundred lines, "I must be more precise with my answers so that pedantic little fools like willowman wont jump to conclusions"
I think weekend newspapers are the worst culprits for including these leaflets. If it carries on at this rate they will no longer need an advertisment section. I suppose it makes economic sense, an advert in a newspaper runs into pounds but a leaflet would only cost a few pence at most and is more likely to be read.

Couldn't agree more. Naturally I support re-forestation but surely it will be better to leave the old trees standing in the first place.

I just hope the latest campaign of Vote Blue Go Green is true.
i apologize for making you feel suitably chastised willowman (chuckling as i type) i honestly wasn't trying to. it's all about profit for these big companies, they just rape and pillage and move on.
maxximus - no problemo, nothing like a bit of chastisement to get the blood flowing. Totally agree with you about the big companies. The owners, or current management, aren't bothered about what will happen years down the line after their tenure is long gone, as long as they make a name for themselves now.
Perhaps we could be like the Native Americans and look to see how our actions will affect seven generations on.
RATTER15 - "we are depleting century old rainforests and woodland all over the world for this so called advertising etc" is what you actually wrote.
As this so called advertising that the question concerns is made from paper, we must therefore be felling the trees for paper, yes?
So I jumped to the obvious conclusion!!
As more adverters see the Internet as an alternative revenue stream, we might see the decline in paper-based marketing.

However, I don't think I (for one) have ever paid any attention to pop-ups or side bars on any internet page (I mean, have any of you clicked on any of the links on the right hand side of this page you're currently reading?)

well actually SP, it is surprising I get any chores done at all due to the amount of time I spend on "The Soulmate Calculator" on the left. If I do have any spare time this is often spent on "Nappy Waste Disposal", so that proves your point wrong.
